Thursday Thirteen - symptoms before going gluten free

>
Thirteen symptoms Twisted Cinderella felt of Celiac (Gluten intolerance).

Since I was recently asked what my symptoms were before going gluten free, I figured I would share them this way.
  1. bloating and horrible cramping of my abdomen
  2. back pain
  3. diarrhea (especially after eating certain foods) and gas
  4. dehydration
  5. exhausted/no energy at all. It would take me all day just to get the dishes done
  6. depression
  7. extremely dry skin
  8. Muscle cramping in the legs
  9. random unexplained rashes
  10. previous diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome
  11. joint pains (I felt like I was a old lady with painful joints a lot of the time)
  12. chronic sinus problems
  13. I would have strong reactions to foods while eating out and my reactions seemed to lesson somewhat as I began to limit certain foods. When I went completely gluten/dairy free, they disappeared entirely and when I tasted a little to test, I had a horrible reactions again.

Thank you for posting your symptoms. For a while I was having certain reactions to certain foods. It turned out after my doctor and I reviewed my food diary that I have a food allergy. I am allergic to anythng in the peanut family. Weird how all these years I had no symptoms and then BAM one day to the next I ended up with a rash so bad that my skin was red and inflamed.

I have several of the symptoms you mention in your blog, but I think it is primarly a dairy issue as a result of the birth control I am taking for my PCOS. But I appreciate you posting your symptoms.

Thank you,

Nina:)

I had a friend with celiac's. She said it is an inherited condition passed on from fathers to their children. Have you heard anything like that?

Seems like this is becoming so much more common. I hope going gluten free has eased your symptoms.

I have never been diagnosed as have celiac but I am allergic to wheat. I feel so much better when I stay away from it that bread is pretty much off our menu. I try to stay off gluten as well because I figure in for a penny, in for a pound, um, so to speak.

I had almost all the same symptoms.

My mom has celiac-did you know there is a blood test now to confirm it and have your kids, etc, tested if they present with any symptoms? Best wishes!

Nina, Celiac symptoms tend to vary in degrees from person to person. If you do suspect you have problems, I would ask your doctor about it or try eliminating gluten to see how you feel.

Kristen, I would say that for me it was inherited from my mother's side of the family.

Jenn, you are right, it does seem more common.

CountryDew, I do understand what you mean, I feel so much better these days now that I am gfcf.

Melissa, I do know about the test. I am actually thinking about taking my daughter in next week to request that she get tested.
